Through research funded by the U.S. Navy, NOAA and the National Science Foundation, scientists have discovered blue whales from Southern California to the Indian and Southern Oceans are singing the same songs, but their pitch or frequency has been declining over the last few decades.
Scientists believe this change may be due to an increase in the population; perhaps the males don’t need to sing as loud to attract females. In the future, tracking the pitch or frequency of whalesong may become a means to monitor the population. Click to read
