Science Daily reports California’s Central Valley is pumping groundwater for irrigation at rates that will not be sustainable if current trends continue. Water tables are declining due to persistent drought.
Twin Satellites called The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE, allow scientists to monitor changes in the Earth’s gravity field caused by the movement of water in land, ocean, ice and atmosphere. GRACE will aid water managers in allocating water recourses and making hard decisions based on sustainability.
