Atrazine, a weed killer commonly used in the U.S. but banned from use in the E.U. since 2004, is the target of a
new study by biologists at the University of California-Berkeley. According to their findings, this herbicide emasculated and chemically castrated 10% of the male frogs in their study, leaving the other 90% with lowered sperm counts and decreased libido, perhaps explaining the current decline in the frog population.
In 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that 40% of all groundwater samples and 75% of all streams tested between 1992 and 2001 contained atrazine.
