The International Whaling Commission has proposed a new plan that would legitimize whaling for Japan, Norway, and Iceland, the only three nations that currently hunt whales in defiance of the current ban. Environmental groups like the World Wildlife Fund oppose the arrangement. Voice of America® quotes Wendy Elliott from WWF saying, “Essentially what the compromise would do is allow commercial whaling in the Southern Ocean. This is a designated whale sanctuary, it's one of the key places in the world for whales - if there is one place on earth where whales should be protected it is there.”
