New Zealand plans to build a $402 million tidal energy project at the entrance to Kaipara Harbour next year. The proposal includes 200 tidal-powered turbines submerged at the entrance to the harbor, a design that will allow leisure craft and barges to pass over the turbines. Cables will feed electricity into the national grid. The project is expected to generate 200 megawatts of power, enough energy for 250,000 New Zealand homes.
